Q & A with My Mentors
(Q=question, N=Nicole Su's answer, M=Michael Su's answer)
Q: What was your favorite experience/location during our trip to Taiwan? Why?
N: I'd say the National Palace Museum was a nice experience. It was interesting to see the national treasures and learning about Taiwan's history. I also enjoyed visiting all the variety of shops and businesses. It's also really nice how most stores are open 24/7 so you're never really bored. I also love how much the relatives love karaoke! Since they don't really have very many guests stop by, they were excited to set the karaoke machine up.
M: I would also have to say the National Palace Museum because I learned a lot more about Taiwan's history and its national treasures. It was interesting to learn about how intricate the art pieces were considering the tools they had at the time.
Q: Would you live there or only visit? Explain your choice.
N: I'd only visit. I think it's too busy for everyday life and way too crowded for my liking.
M: I think I'd only visit because I'm actually not a very big fan of busy, crowded places.
Q: If you had to start the trip over, would you do anything differently? Why or why not?
N: Yes, I'd love to fly first class! Also, I would've liked to avoid having to drive to Chicago. It would've been so much easier if we didn't have to take any connecting flights.
M: Yes, I would do a lot more pre-planning before we left. This would have made everything a bit more organized. Rather than making up plans at the last second, it would've been much easier for everyone if we had planned things out beforehand.
Q: Do you think this was an insightful trip/experience? Why or why not?
N: Yes, I think it was. We got to meet a lot of relatives that we never met before and we also learned more about the history of your grandfather's side of the family. We were also able to experience Taiwan's version of Memorial Day which is something special you might not experience again in the future. It was also good to experience the hustle & bustle of daily city life compared to quiet Mid-Western life.
M: Yes, I think it was great for you kids to see and experience Taiwan. It's definitely changed a lot from the last time I visited so I think it was honestly a great experience for all of us.
Q: Did you gain any new knowledge or skills from this experience? If so, what?
N: I've learned how to maneuver around the city as well as learning how to bargain at night markets. I've also learned a lot more about Michael's side of the family which was very interesting.
M: Yes, I learned how to get around using the MRT. The last time I was there, there weren't as many MRT lines and stuff.
